Product Spotlight, Part 1: Self-Clinching Studs

Strong, reliable fastening solutions are essential across many industries. That’s why we’re excited to launch a three-part series on self-clinching fasteners. We’re starting with one of the most versatile options: self-clinching studs.

These fasteners are designed to provide strong, reusable threads in thin sheet metal panels while keeping installation quick and cost-effective. Once pressed into place, the stud becomes a permanent part of the panel, delivering high torque and push-out resistance without requiring access to both sides of the assembly. From electronics enclosures to industrial machinery, self-clinching studs have earned their place as a trusted fastening solution. Read below to find out more on self-clinching studs!

Available in Unified and Metric Threads

Flush Head Studs

When appearance matters, flush head studs are an ideal choice. Self-clinching flush head studs offer an excellent solution that provide strong reusable threads in panels as thin as .040” thick. They provide a cosmetically appealing flush mount where the head of the fastener is embedded into the panel into which it is installed. After installation the self-clinching stud is captivated in the panel and offers excellent push out and torque out values. When installing the mating fastener no tool is required to prevent the self-clinching stud from rotating in the panel, since the fastener has become an integral part of the assembly. The fasteners provide a low cost of installation and are easily installed using a press that supplies the squeezing force required to properly seat the fastener.

Materials:

·       Heat treated steel – Zinc Clear

·       300 series stainless steel – Passivated

·       2024-T4 aluminum

High Torque Studs

For applications where performance takes priority, high torque studs are your answer. High torque studs offer an excellent solution for installing strong reusable threads in thin sheet metal that offer greater torque out and pull through resistance when needed in a design. The fasteners can be installed into sheets as thin as .050” thick depending on the particular thread selected. These fasteners offer a low cost of installation and are easily installed using a press that supplies the squeezing force required to properly seat the part in the panel.

Once the fastener is installed in the panel it becomes an integral part of the assembly. When mating fasteners are attached to the high torque studs, no tool is required to prevent the fastener from rotating in the panel during assembly. Due to the design of the head, which provides the greater torque out and pull through resistance, the head of the fastener sits slightly above the surface of the assembly.

Materials:

·       Heat treated steel – Zinc Clear

·       300 series stainless steel - Passivated

·       Phosphor Bronze – CDA-510

High Torque Wide Head Studs

When working with ultra-thin sheets—as thin as .031"/0.8mm—wide head studs are the answer. The extra wide head eliminates distortion of the panel despite the very thin thickness due to the fact that the load is spread over a greater surface area. This extra wide head coupled with a thicker design allows mating parts to be attached with larger holes with no problems. The HCW and HCWS series of wide head studs offer excellent torque out and pull through resistance. These fasteners offer a low cost of installation and are easily installed using a press that provides the squeezing force required to properly seat the fastener into the panel.

Once the studs are installed, they become an integral part of the assembly. When properly installed the head of the fastener sits slightly above the panel. When the mating nuts are attached, no tool is required to keep the stud from rotating as the stud is captivated in the panel. If later servicing or assembly is required there is no need to access both sides of the panel since the fastener is permanently attached to the assembly.

Materials:

·       Heat treated steel – Zinc Clear

Studs for Thin Sheets

Studs for very thin sheets offer an excellent solution that provide strong reusable threads in panels as thin as .020” thick. They provide a cosmetically appealing mount where the head of the fastener sits slightly above the panel into which it is installed. After installation the self clinching stud is captivated in the panel and offers excellent push out and torque out values.

When installing the mating fastener no tool is required to prevent the self clinching stud from rotating in the panel, since the fastener has become an integral part of the assembly. The fasteners provide a low cost of installation and are easily installed using a press that supplies the squeezing force required to properly seat the fastener.

Materials:

·       Heat treated steel – Zinc Clear

·       300 series stainless steel - Passivated

Close-to-the-Edge Studs

Sometimes a design calls for fasteners placed right at the panel’s edge. Close-to-the-edge studs make that possible, with a smaller head that prevents distortion and bulging, all while maintaining the same secure hold as standard studs. They provide a cosmetically appealing flush mount where the head of the fastener is embedded into the panel into which it is installed and the smaller head configuration prevents distortion and bulging of the panel.

After installation the self-clinching stud is captivated in the panel and offers excellent push out and torque out values. When installing the mating fastener no tool is required to prevent the self-clinching stud from rotating in the panel, since the fastener has become an integral part of the assembly.

Materials:

·       Heat treated steel – Zinc Clear

·       300 series stainless steel - Passivated

Concealed Head Studs

When cosmetic appearance is paramount, concealed head studs provide strong, reusable threads without leaving a trace. Installed into blind milled holes, they allow for a completely smooth exterior surface.. Self-clinching concealed head studs offer an excellent solution that provide strong reusable threads that provide a totally unblemished exterior of the enclosure. The concealed head studs are permanently mounted in thin metal sheets as thin as .062” thick.

After installation the self-clinching stud is captivated in the panel. The concealed head studs are often used in applications such as gaming equipment and other applications where the cosmetic appearance of the unit is extremely important.
